What is the Master’s in International Migration?
The University Institute for Migration Studies (IUEM) has been running this Master’s programme since 1995, training highly qualified professionals to pursue careers in the field of international migration.
This is a multidisciplinary Master’s programme, designed to develop professional skills in the field of international migration. The programme combines a solid theoretical grounding with an introduction to research, facilitating access to doctoral studies in related fields. Through the curriculum, students acquire knowledge of migration theories, migration policies, human rights, integration and social cohesion, as well as methodological tools for analysing migration processes.
The programme is complemented by work placements in organisations linked to the field of migration, fostering direct contact with the realities of human mobility and inclusion policies. Furthermore, students on the Master’s programme will have the opportunity to undertake voluntary work outside Spain through the Vuela Programme, taking part in one of the 35 projects being carried out in 11 countries across Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia.

Our week of face-to-face learning
The face-to-face week of the Master’s in International Migration, held in February in Madrid, is a key part of the Program, combining intensive training, opportunities for students to meet, and professional networking. During this time, students from a variety of backgrounds share experiences and knowledge, forging an academic community that goes beyond the online environment and transforms the study of migration into a collective experience.
Focusing on the module ‘Research and Professional Intervention’, this week offers practical tools in data analysis, research methodologies and applied project design. It also includes integration and social activities, with accommodation and meals provided, facilitating a comprehensive, accessible and transformative experience both inside and outside the classroom.

Thanks to the master's degree, I had the opportunity to work directly in border and crisis contexts. I have been working outside Spain for more than three years: first in northern Morocco, on the Mediterranean route, and currently in the Sahara, providing a humanitarian response to one of the main current migration crises linked to the Atlantic route. The Master's degree allowed me to deepen my theoretical knowledge, research and critical reflection skills, and above all how to transfer them to the field of direct and humanitarian intervention.

As there is high demand for places at Comillas and places are limited, the best candidates must be selected through entrance examinations.
Each class has a form tutor, whose role is to help students settle into the class and ensure they achieve good academic results. Furthermore, at Comillas, the teaching system is characterised, amongst other things, by personalised support and a close, ongoing relationship between teachers and students.
Comillas’ teaching system is specifically geared towards engaging with the real-world context of businesses, institutions and organisations, as well as professional practice. The Degree Guidance, Work Placements and Employment Service (OPE) is responsible for helping students secure work placements related to their studies in order to enrich their education. In the 2022–23 academic year, 7,101 student work placements in companies were arranged.
The Career Guidance, Work Placements and Employment Service (OPE) is the university’s service dedicated to providing information, guidance and support to help recent graduates enter the labour market and to assist Comillas graduates in planning their degree paths; To this end, it offers an online tool that connects candidates directly with 8,302 companies with which Comillas has a relationship. During the 2022–23 academic year, 1,542 job vacancies were processed. Of all graduates from the 2021 cohort, 92 per cent were in employment, either working or continuing their studies, within six months of completing their degrees.
