Faculty of Theology

We respond to those who seek rigorous training to "give a reason for their hope" (1Pt 3,15).

Mission and objective

The Faculty of Theology at Comillas is the oldest in Spain (1904). It has a qualified and motivated faculty of lecturers, made up of men and women, religious men and women from different congregations, diocesan priests and lay people. Its lecturers and tutors are distinguished by their seriousness, rigour and personalised attention to our students; and they have a theological style rooted in the best ecclesial tradition, which tries to be faithful to the Word of God and to the life and culture of the people of our time, whom it views with cordial openness and a critical attitude.

During the academic year 2022-2023, the Faculty of Theology was made up of 50 lecturers, with a clearly international background (Boston, Frankfurt, Paris, Rome). Of these, 37 were dedicated to the university, 46 held PhDs, 15 had been positively evaluated by independent university quality agencies (ANECA or ACAP), and 15 had at least one six-year research period. In addition to this magnificent staff, we had the collaboration of lecturers from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (oral and written expression, ancient languages and philosophy); and from the Faculty of Canon Law (legal subjects).

Mission and objectives faculty of theology

Our faculty carries out important research activity, both in the publication of books or chapters in books, in articles in indexed and non-indexed journals, presenting papers and communications at congresses and scientific conferences. It also carries out an outstanding teaching and dissemination work in other educational centres near Comillas, as well as in the university itself, through its participation in study days or similar events. On the other hand, the lecturers in Theology are very present and active and have different responsibilities in parishes, training of religious, governing councils, etc.

This research and dissemination work has been recognised by having reached the 33rd position in QS World University Rankings 2023, in the field of "Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies". For several years now, the Faculty of Theology has been ranked among the top 50 in the world, the first Spanish faculty in its field, and among the top Catholic faculties in the world.

Our students are clearly international: candidates for the priesthood, religious and lay people of nationalities from all five continents. It is certainly a very positive experience for formation to meet companions from so many congregations and continents.

Students in class

As members of the university, students have access to all its services: psychopedagogical guidance, pastoral, cultural and solidarity activities, sports, etc. The university has a library with a large general collection: more than half a million volumes; more than 11,000 journals, including more than 2,500 living ones. Its staff is highly qualified and its electronic resources are state-of-the-art. Moreover, the entire campus and all the classrooms are equipped with the most modern and advanced technology: Wi-Fi, electronic devices, etc.

As part of the process of implementing the European Higher Education Area, in the 2009-2010 academic year we reformed the curriculum, incorporating twelve optional credits in the degree in Theology at Cantoblanco/CIHS (canonical baccalaureate), which allows students to partially modulate their curriculum with training, among other subjects, in communication and public speaking, biblical languages, prevention of child abuse, biblical spirituality.

A new reform, which seeks to facilitate more autonomous student learning, was carried out in the 18-19 academic year in the light of Veritatis Gaudim, and approved by the Congregation for Catholic Education in Rome at the end of that year. In addition, over the last few years we have been working on the competencies (learning outcomes), which are now a feature of our teaching, through the teaching guides. We have also taken a step forward in the implementation of a more active methodology, which also takes into account practical and attitudinal competences.

Regular departmental meetings and evaluation boards are a valuable instrument for monitoring the implementation of the Bologna process.

All of the above is part of the importance that our faculty attaches to teaching innovation, for which we always count on the invaluable help of excellent professionals from the university. Our faculty is, in short, a highly qualified place to find excellent training for future priests, religious men and women, and lay men and women who are going to dedicate themselves to evangelising work in any of its various forms.
