What is a Bachelor's Degree in Theology?
The Bachelor’s Degree in Theology (equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Theology within the pontifical ecclesiastical system) is an official three-year on-campus Program taught in Madrid by the Faculty of Theology at the Pontifical University of Comillas (CIHS).
It is aimed at those who wishto undertake rigoroustheological training for the exercise of the priestly ministry, religious teaching, parish pastoral work or leadership in religious communities and congregations. The curriculum for the Bachelor's Degree in Theology covers the major areas of the discipline: Sacred Scripture, Systematic Theology, Moral Theology, Church History, Canon Law, Liturgy, Patrology and Pastoral Theology, with optional modules in spirituality, biblical languages (Greek and Hebrew) and pastoral practice.
As it is a pontifical degree at EQF level 7, the Bachelor’s degree in Theology qualifies holders for entry to Master’s degreeprogrammes and Doctoral programmes in Theologyat recognised ecclesiastical institutions.

Throughout the three-year institutional cycle, the student must take 12 ECTS. Each student can create his or her own itinerary, according to his or her interests and these rules:
- Practicum I/II/III, 2 ECTS each. All students can take Practicum I; only those in the third year, II and III.
- Biblical languages: a maximum of 12 ECTS out of the 12 compulsory ECTS.
- Intensive seminar on Spiritual Exercises: a maximum of 5 ECTS out of the 12 compulsory ECTS.
- Subjects/units in collaboration with the Centre for Child Protection of the Gregorian University in Rome, a maximum of 4.
- Courses on Biblical Spirituality, a maximum of 6 ECTS out of the 12 compulsory ECTS.
- "Continuing Education" courses: a maximum of 4.5 ECTS out of the 12 compulsory ECTS.
- Attendance at Conferences (of the Faculty or others duly documented and evaluated): a maximum of 4 ECTS out of the 12 compulsory ECTS.

- Admission Profile
Admission to the first cycle of the Faculty of Theology is open to (Bachelor's Degree) are those who have completed the first cycle or hold a degree in Philosophy ( pure) and those who have completed a two-year pre-theological programme in Philosophy comprising 120 ECTS credits or the equivalent at a higher education institution and hold the relevant university entry qualification.International students who have not studied in Spanish and wish to commence the Bachelor's Degree programme must provide evidence of their language proficiency through the DELE B2 Diploma (Diploma in Spanish as a Foreign Language), awarded by the Instituto Cervantes or by another equivalent language institute; in the latter case, the Dean of the Faculty, after consulting theComillas Institute of Modern Languages, will decide whether or not it is equivalent.Students who do not provide the required DELE certificate must sit a language test, organised by the Faculty of Theology at the start of the academic year through the University’s Institute of Modern Languages.

At Comillas, the two disciplines share a historical link: the CIHS offers a Bachelor’s degree in Theology, whilst other faculties include philosophy in their curricula. These are complementary courses for those seeking a well-rounded humanistic education.
The Bachelor’s Degree in Theology at Comillas CIHS is taught on a face-to-face basis in Madrid, which enables students to take part in the Practicum, the Spiritual Exercises, liturgical practice and the centre’s community life – elements that cannot be replicated in the online format of the distance-learning Bachelor’s Degree in Theology. Some institutions offer distance learning in theology, but without the pontifical recognition or the EQF Level 7 status of the Comillas Program.
