Information for students
Develop new skills
In keeping with the identity and role of the theologian, their academic training must incorporate both conceptual aspects and a set of theoretical and practical skills and abilities, which we shall organise into three levels:
Cognitive Competences (knowledge)
In the light of Christian Sapientia, graduates possess a broad body of knowledge regarding the disciplines that form the epistemological foundation of theology ( including both general content and that which forms part of the various areas of specialisation).
Areas of Knowledge: Philosophy, Fundamental Theology, Sacred Scripture, Systematic Theology, Liturgy and the Sacraments, Patristics and Church History, Moral Theology, Spiritual Theology, Pastoral Theology and Canon Law.
They possess a basic understanding of philosophy (the two-year philosophy programme) which enables them to approach theology as a rational reflection on the faith.
They have acquired sufficient mastery of the fundamental areas of theology, as listed above, to justify and substantiate the statements of the Catholic Christian community’s confession of faith, drawing upon both Sacred Scripture and the Magisterium, as well as the great theologians of the Christian tradition up to the present day.
They possess a broad understanding of religious phenomena in the past and present (history and phenomenology of religion).
They have a basic understanding of the various scientific methods of scriptural and theological interpretation.
They are able to apply the key principles for correctly approaching the discernment of moral issues in a pluralist society, and to present the Christian perspective within this debate.
Possesses sufficient competence to read and understand theological texts produced over the course of twenty centuries of history.
Possesses a personalised synthesis of the main tenets of the faith and is able to explain them in an organised, systematic and reasoned manner, and to situate them within the historical and ecclesial context in which they were forged.
Possesses the liturgical and pastoral knowledge necessary to carry out the tasks and ministries specific to this degree.
Procedural competences (know-how)
The training of graduates in Theology ensures the acquisition of competences relating to know-how, that is, the acquisition of the procedures and strategies necessary for carrying out the functions proper to a theologian in the various fields in which they practise their ‘profession’.
They are able to give an account, either orally or in writing, of the theological synthesis acquired during their training.
They identify the social context as the theological framework from which they reflect on the Christian faith and developevangelising initiatives, being able to grasp the distinct characteristics of diverse socio-cultural environments and different individuals, and to adapt and communicate the Christian message within them.
They creatively integrate the teachings of Sacred Scripture, tradition and the Church’s magisterium into theological work, being able to contextualise them and apply them to the various social and cultural situations in which they find themselves, as well as to deliver a lecture or write an essay on a current issue in Christian life.
They are able to translate the knowledge and methods of scriptural, historical, canonical and theological interpretation they have acquired into pastoral and educational practice.
They possess the basic skills and strategies for communication, counselling, support, and the resolution of moral problems and conflicts arising in ecclesial, religious, marital, social, emotional-sexual and bioethical contexts.
They possess the ability to analyse, argue and organise relevant information on the main Christian dogmas or truths in a critical and meaningful manner.
They are able to work in a team, exchanging views, participating in discussions and collaborating with others on pastoral, liturgical and social tasks.
Possesses the skills to carry out community leadership and spiritual accompaniment tasks.
Attitudinal Competences (how to be)
The graduate in Theology acts upon the basis of a specific ‘way of being’, that is, grounded in thevalues and attitudes that permeate their knowledge and ‘professional’ practice.
They ‘feel with the Church’ and are willing to commit themselves faithfully to it in the tasks in which they apply their professional competencies.
They live out the tenets of the faith they profess in an integrated manner, both in their personal lives and in their activities within the Church, bearing witness to them.
In their work, they demonstrate a particular concern for the advancement of justice through love.
He is able to convey and foster the hope that springs from faith within his world and culture.
Respect and the pursuit of fraternal relationships characterise the way they express themselves and relate to others, the way they convey the meaning and value of their faith, and the way they engage with and dialogue with other religions and value systems.
Possessing the key principles for correctly framing moral issues in a pluralist society, they are able to offer the Christian perspective in such debates without imposing it, yet without overlooking it either, adopting an attitude of dialogue, listening and respect for others.
