China–United States Trade War: What Does the Solar Panel Dispute Teach Us?

The current trade war between China and the United States had its prelude in solar panels. This case shows that protectionism does not stop multinationals: Chinese companies shifted their investments to other countries and continued exporting to the U.S., reducing the impact of non-tariff barriers. This dynamic reveals the limits of the trade war and the tension between economic nationalism and the energy transition.
