What can the Master’s degree offer you?
The dual programme comprising the Master’s in Telecommunications Engineering and the Master’s in Smart Grids, delivered by Strathclyde University and Comillas ICAI in close collaboration with Iberdrola, combines industry and academia to provide students with a broad-based education in telecommunications engineering, complemented by specialisation in smart grids – one of the key innovations in the energy sector.
The aim is to meet the growing demand for engineers to lead the digitalisation of the electricity grid. Students will gain a detailed understanding of the operation and planning of electricity networks under the new smart grid paradigm.
Students will spend one semester in Spain and one semester in Scotland; they will also undertake work placements (from May to August) at leading companies such as Iberdrola, Scottish Power Energy Networks (Glasgow), Minsait, Naturgy and Gridespertise.

There are two types of international mobility programme available during the Master’s degree: an academic exchange at a European university through the Erasmus+ Programme or at universities in other countries with which Comillas has signed a bilateral agreement; or an international work placement to gain work experience abroad.

Frequently Asked Questions
As there is high demand for places at Comillas and places are limited, the best candidates must be selected through entrance examinations.
Each class has a form tutor, whose role is to help students settle into the class and ensure they achieve good academic results. Furthermore, at Comillas, the teaching system is characterised, amongst other things, by personalised support and a close, ongoing relationship between teachers and students.
Comillas’ teaching system is specifically geared towards engaging with the realities of businesses, institutions and organisations, as well as professional practice. The Degree Guidance, Work Placements and Employment Service (OPE) is responsible for helping students secure work placements related to their studies in order to enrich their education. In the 2022–23 academic year, 7,101 student work placements in companies were arranged.
The Career Guidance, Work Placements and Employment Service (OPE) is the university’s service dedicated to providing information, guidance and support to help recent graduates enter the labour market and to assist Comillas graduates in planning their degree paths; To this end, it offers an online tool that connects candidates directly with 8,302 companies with which Comillas has a relationship. During the 2022–23 academic year, 1,542 job vacancies were processed. Of the total number of graduates from the 2021 cohort, 92 per cent were in employment or further study within six months of completing their studies.
