Nobel Prize in Economics (2003) Robert F. Engle visited Comillas Pontifical University and, among the activities in which he participated, there was a meeting with patron companies of the Chair for Smart Industry (CIC). There, he discussed with the participants the current challenges of the economy and society.
At this meeting, the professor emeritus of the NYU Stern School of Business in New York had an animated discussion with the other participants on how the Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had accelerated all the transition processes towards a decarbonised economy. There was also time to talk about the political tensions between the United States and Chine and how these have contributed to the high inflation of the last two years.
Outside of geoeconomics, Robert Engle also pointed out how Artificial Intelligence is already making an impact in the labour market, business and training. He highlighted the need to develop the critical thinking of young students, more important than ever. He also emphasised the importance of continuous learning in any kind of job, as technology is always asking for a better adaptability to the changes of the labour market.
Engle concluded by saying that he had very much enjoyed his visit to Spain, as well as the meetings and conferences with lecturers, students and alumni at Comillas.
