The Rector of Comillas, Enrique Sanz, SJ, has signed the university's adhesion to the Canary Islands Declaration on Service-learning in Higher Education, a declaration that reflects the commitment of Spanish universities to Service-learning. This declaration was promoted within the framework of the X National and IV International Congress on University Service-learning held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in July 2021. Since then, some universities, such as Comillas, University of Las Palmas, the UNED, the Rey Juan Carlos, University of La Laguna, the Complutense University, University of Alcalá and the Polytechnic University of Madrid, among others, have signed this Institutional Declaration.
As stated in the declaration, “Service-Learning is an approach on higher education that seeks to train excellent professionals and a society committed to the common good through teaching, research and knowledge transfer that includes community service and academic learning in a coherent project. This allows students to acquire skills, by working on real needs and problems in their environment with the aim of improving it. The goal of the faculty is to innovate, research and transfer knowledge responsibly and with a social impact".
The institutional commitment of Comillas to Service-Learning is clear and is reinforced with this adhesion and other actions, such as the Conference on Good Practices in Teaching, which is being held this week at Comillas Conecta Lab and focuses on Service-Learning as a methodology for teaching innovation.
