At the beginning of June, Agnieszka Walter-Drop, Directorate-General for Logistics and Interpretation for Conferences of the European Parliament (DG LINC), visited the headquarters of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Comillas CIHS, to learn first-hand about the Master's Degree in Conference Interpreting, with whom the European Parliament has signed a memorandum of understanding that articulates the cooperation between the two institutions.
We have had a very close cooperation with them since the Master's started," says Elena Aguirre, director of the Master's. "With the European Parliament we do a lot of virtual classes throughout the year. "With the European Parliament we do many virtual classes throughout the year which allow our students, apart from being trained by us and having our feedback, to have a great experience of receiving feedback on their work from interpreters who are officials of the European Parliament, which is a plus for their learning," Elena tells us. In addition to these classes, we also cooperate with DG LINC through our participation in master classes, the pedagogical assistance provided by interpreters from the European Parliament, and the annual visit of our students to Brussels to learn first-hand about the work of interpreters in the different institutions of the European Union.
In this context, Agnieszka Walter-Drop, whose role as head of DG-LINC is to ensure that language is not an obstacle in meetings and to facilitate multilingual communication, also took the opportunity to meet the students. After the institutional welcome, in the second part of the visit, she met with students from both the Master's Degree in Conference Interpreting and the Bachelor's Degree in Translation and Interpreting at Comillas. She spoke to them about the day-to-day workings of the European Parliament, as well as the type of meetings that take place. In addition, Walter-Drop was accompanied by Elsa Michael, an interpreter at the European institution, who spoke to them from her experience in interpreting at some of the most multilingual meetings that take place in Europe, such as the plenary sessions of the European Parliament.
