Lecturer Valentina Gómez Mampaso (1943-2023) passed away in Madrid on 28 December 2023. A lecturer at Comillas Pontifical University for decades, she began teaching in the academic year 1975-76 as a lecturer in History of Law and Institutions. She has held different academic positions, including that of Dean of the Faculty of Law (Comillas ICADE) from 1988 to 1990 and from 1994 to 1995.
With a PhD in Political Science, she was a disciple of Luis García de Valdeavellano, with whom she wrote her thesis La Peste en tiempos de los Reyes Católicos, and published numerous articles and monographs on the Catholic Monarchs, women in Spain and codification. Gómez Mampaso was a corresponding member of the Instituto Mirandino de Caracas (1970), the Real Academia Hispano-americana de Cádiz (1972), the Real Academia de Jurisprudencia y Legislación (1987) and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes y Ciencias Históricas de Toledo (1998). She has been a member of the jury for the Prince of Asturias Awards for Social Sciences (2000 and 2001) and the Spanish National History Award (2011). In 2015 she was admitted to the Civil Order of Alfonso X, the Wise, one of the most important awards in the field of teaching in our country.
Her academic life was notable for her teaching work, training several generations of jurists, students who, despite the years that have passed, continue to remember her with great affection for her dedication to university life but, above all, for her humanity, tenacity, exemplarity and dedication. In the field of research, her work was constant and tireless, giving us in 2021, one of her last great contributions, together with lecturer Blanca Sáenz de Santamaría, the book Lecturas de historia del derecho español: textos y contextos (Lectures on the history of Spanish law: texts and contexts).
"The person is gone, but we are left with the memory of a great woman, a great teacher, an example of rectitude, vocation and passion for the university and a first-rate academic," says the dean of the faculty, Abel Veiga.
