RAYUELA: a video game to teach children how to surf safely on the internet
This initiative combines research and play to protect children in the digital world

Leaving a child alone in the jungle would be unthinkable. However, many minors navigate the "digital jungle" on a daily basis without a guide. The RAYUELA project, coordinated at Comillas by a team led by Gregorio López López, lecturer at the School of Engineering (Comillas ICAI), seeks to protect them through an educational video game that proposes six "cyber-adventures" based on real situations, such as false profiles, cyber-bullying or phishing.
More than 2 000 young people in Europe have tested the game, and their feedback has helped to improve the experience. In addition, the project is already applied in educational programmes and prevention campaigns, such as the Portuguese initiative Missão Cibersegura, which involves hundreds of schools and facilitators, reaching thousands of children and education professionals.
The video game combines learning and fun, and allows researchers to analyse how children deal with digital risks and what factors increase their vulnerability. RAYUELA, an educational and research tool, provides useful resources for parents, teachers and child protection policy makers.
