What can the Master’s degree offer you?
The Master’s Degree in the Electricity Sector / Master in the Electric Power Industry addresses the need to update the training of professionals in the electricity sector and of recent graduates wishing to enter it, in order to cope with regulatory and technological changes.
The far-reaching regulatory changes of recent years have led to the emergence of organised electricity markets (generation and supply) and the need to design or adapt the regulatory framework for these and other sectors, such as transmission and distribution. Furthermore, the electricity sector is undergoing significant technological changes (renewable energy sources, active demand management, the development of smart grids, etc.).
Building on a basic background in engineering (or, with some additional effort, in other disciplines) students will gain an in-depth understanding of the economic, regulatory and technological foundations of these new business areas, and will acquire direct experience of their application through a supervised individual project – the Master’s Thesis – carried out at institutions and companies within the sector or at the Institute for Technological Research (IIT).

There are scholarships available for work placements with sponsoring companies. The amount of these scholarships is determined by each company (usually between 3,000 and 6,000 euros) for an internship period that can be spread throughout the year depending on the student’s availability and the sponsoring company’s requirements.
A limited number of scholarships are offered by partner companies for work placements linked to the Master’s thesis.
Other scholarships and study grants: Iberdrola Foundationscholarships for master’s degree studies in the fields of Energy and the Environment, for students from Spain, Mexico, Brazil, the United Kingdom and the United States.
For Mexican students accepted onto this Master’s programme whose studies are funded by FIDERH, Comillas will grant them a discount equivalent to 10 per cent of the total cost of their studies.
KA107 grants awarded by the European Commission for students from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Career and academic opportunities
Among the various sectors in which you can begin your professional career, the energy sector – and in particular the electricity sector – has a number of features that make it highly attractive. The global boom in electricity consumption, the creation of electricity markets, the emergence of new business areas within companies, the introduction of new generation technologies such as renewable sources, interaction with other sectors such as the gas sector, the need to regulate specific activities within this industry and to incorporate environmental impact criteria, the internationalisation of energy markets, etc., are just a few examples that give an idea of the variety of fields in which it is possible to pursue an exciting degree. As all these changes have taken place in recent years, there is a pressing need to update the training of a new generation of experts and professionals capable of developing, researching and innovating in the electricity sector on an international scale. It was with this aim in mind that the Master’s in the Electricity Sector was designed, building on the long-standing tradition of Comillas ICAI and the Institute for Technological Research (IIT) in training professionals and researchers for the electricity sector.
Graduate Profile
The MEPI programme equips students to pursue a degree in the planning and operation of generation, transmission, distribution and retail activities, as well as in system and market operations, or in the analysis and development of regulations relating to each of these activities.
Based on the knowledge and skills acquired, graduates can embark on, or relaunch, their professional degrees in electricity generation and supply companies, in operators and companies that own transmission and distribution networks, in system and market operators, in regulatory bodies overseeing the operation of the electricity system, as well as in consultancy firms providing advisory and analytical services on all these topics.
Access to a PhD programme
Furthermore, although this programme is not a research-based Master’s degree, the knowledge acquired may prove useful in PhD programmes in electrical engineering or other fields addressing issues within the sector. As such, the Master’s programme could also serve as a starting point for embarking on a research degree in this field.

As there is high demand for places at Comillas and places are limited, the best candidates must be selected through entrance examinations.
Each class has a form tutor, whose role is to help students settle into the class and ensure they achieve the best possible academic results. Furthermore, at Comillas, the teaching system is characterised, amongst other things, by personalised support and a fluid, ongoing relationship between teachers and students.
Comillas’ teaching system is specifically geared towards engaging with the realities of businesses, institutions and organisations, as well as professional practice. The Degree Guidance, Work Placements and Employment Service (OPE) is responsible for helping students secure work placements related to their studies in order to enrich their education. In the 2022–23 academic year, 7,101 student work placements in companies were arranged.
The Career Guidance, Work Placements and Employment Service (OPE) is the university’s service dedicated to providing information, guidance and support to help recent graduates enter the labour market and to assist Comillas graduates in planning their degree paths; To this end, it offers an online tool that connects candidates directly with 8,302 companies with which Comillas has established relationships. During the 2022–23 academic year, 1,542 job vacancies were processed. Of the total number of graduates from the class of 2021, 92 per cent were in employment or further study within six months of completing their studies.
