Micro-credential in Injury Biomechanics
What is the Microcredential in Injury Biomechanics?
The Micro-credential in Injury Biomechanics offers an intensive and specialized training program focused on the fundamental principles of biomechanics, with a particular emphasis on the mechanical behavior of human tissues and injury mechanisms.
Designed for engineering students and professionals interested in injury prevention in fields such as automotive safety, sports, or defense, this micro-credential combines in class lectures, hands-on laboratory sessions, and real-world experience through the use of crash surrogates and injury criteria. The course is offered as a master´s degree level course within the Master in Motorsport, Mobility and Safety.
Taught in English and delivered both face-to-face at the Alberto Aguilera campus and the MOBIOS Lab, and in an online format, the program runs as a 75-hour intensive course, including the synchronous lectures, lab projects and personal work (3 ECTS). Its compact and applied format makes it an excellent opportunity to acquire key skills in a rapidly growing field within biomedical engineering and safety research.

Why study Injury Biomechanics?
Injury biomechanics is an emerging field with increasing demand for professionals capable of analyzing, preventing, and mitigating damage to the human body under impact or mechanical stress. This micro-credential, offered by the School of Engineering – ICAI, responds to this need by preparing participants to face real-world challenges in automotive safety, sports performance, or injury-related research.
This program stands out for:
- Expertise in injury biomechanics: In-depth knowledge of injury mechanisms and widely used biomechanical injury criteria.
- Hands-on learning: Active participation in experiments using crash surrogates (dummies, computational models, PMHS) and real-world data analysis.
- Interdisciplinary focus: A unique combination of solid mechanics, human anatomy, and injury evaluation techniques.
- Real-world application: Course content aligned with the demands of industries such as automotive, elite sports, and forensic science.
If you’re looking for rigorous, hands-on training with a real impact on safety and injury prevention, this micro-credential is for you.
Teaching Methodology
Participatory in-class lectures, problem-solving sessions, hands-on laboratory practices, and a significant component of autonomous and collaborative student work.
During the course, participants will:
- Attend theoretical lectures and problem-solving classes to consolidate core concepts.
- Develop practical skills through supervised laboratory sessions.
- Engage in autonomous learning activities, including scientific paper reading and quiz preparation.
- Work collaboratively on laboratory reports and critical reviews of scientific literature.
- Complete course assessment activities, including evaluations and feedback sessions.
Evaluation
- Lab Project 1: 20%
- Lab Project 2: 20%
- Quizzes on assigned readings: 20%
- Individual homework assignments: 15%
- Critical review of a scientific article: 25%
This approach ensures an active, rigorous, and skills-based learning experience aligned with real-world injury prevention scenarios.
