Nuccio Ordine, philosopher, lecturer and man of letters who was awarded an honorary doctorate by Comillas Pontifical University in 2022, passed away this weekend. Some weeks ago, he was awarded the 2023 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities.
"We say goodbye to a friend of Comillas, an intellectual, a grateful and committed lecturer, a peaceful and wise man who believed in and passed on values as relevant to our societies and cultures as solidarity, justice and democracy," says the Rector, Enrique Sanz, SJ. "Nuccio controlled the weight of words like few others, he spoke clearly and openly, he did not hide, he was not afraid. He was a man of action", recalls lecturer Angelo Valastro, Ordine's friend and the person in charge of his laudatio at the investiture ceremony.
"A world without humanities would be an inhuman world: to make humanity more human we need disciplines that are called useless, such as music, literature, philosophy or art, because although they do not produce economic profit, they are important to nourish the spirit," he said during his stay in Madrid to receive the honoris causa. "We have to study the disciplines that we love", said Ordine.
