The university has carried out several actions to coincide with the International Day for the fight against this type of cancer
23 October 2023
International Breast Cancer Day is celebrated on 19 October, with the aim of promoting early detection and ensuring that more and more people have access to timely and effective check-ups, diagnosis and treatment.
Comillas Pontifical University, through Comillas Comunidad, as well as the Organisation and People Services and the "San Juan de Dios" University School of Nursing and Physiotherapy, joined forces to commemorate this day, through various activities for the entire university community. One of them was a panel of experts entitled "Cancer, sport and nutrition", with the participation of Olga García Gómez, Doctor in Integrative Medicine; Vanesa Jorge, head of the Psychosocial Department of the Spanish Association Against Cancer, and Soraya Casla Barrio, Doctor in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, and specialist in oncological exercise.
The director of Comillas Comunidad, Irene Maestre, introduced the round table, recalling that in 2023, 35,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in Spain. "Today we want to put ourselves in the shoes of those people who suffer from the disease with empathy and compassion".
To show the unity of the university community, a large family photo was organised at all the campuses. The unity and commitment of the university to give visibility to the fight against breast cancer continued throughout the weekend with a route through the Pedriza in Madrid.
In addition to the activities held and in line with the university's commitment to the transfer to society, Comillas has several resources available dedicated to this issue and open to the entire university community, among them, the episode of the podcast Comillas takes care of you entitled "Get moving against cancer" and the didactic pill, also in audio format, "Breast self-examination" with Silvia Balaguer.
