Once again this year, Comillas Pontifical University hosted the XLII Conference on Canon Law, organised by the “Asociación Española de Canonistas” or Spanish Association of Experts on Canon Law, which analysed, among other issues, the latest legal reforms approved in the canon law system.
The dean of the Faculty of Canon Law and Theology, Francisco Ramírez, SJ, opened the conference. During his speech, the Dean recalled the commitment of Comillas to the study and practice of canon law. "We have launched the Specialist Degree in Ecclesiastical Assets Administration, and a new programme for training legal operators in canonical criminal processes will soon be launched by the Apostolic Tribunal of the Roman Rota. This conference is the perfect opportunity to delve into the development of canon law for the benefit of the Church and society".
After that, Carmen Peña, lecturer of the Faculty of Canon Law at Comillas and president of the association, presented the conference and thanked Comillas for its support. "This conference is being held in the 40th anniversary of the formulation of the Code of Canon Law, which is in the midst of a new synodal process that seeks to progress on the Second Vatican Council, something that may lead to a revision of certain institutions. These last years, there has been a significant legislative acceleration and new laws have been enacted, which affect different fields. These changes aim to answer new pastoral needs and are a challenge for canonists” she stated-
In effect, the reform in the Roman Curia, new developments in canonical jurisprudence and problems in the registration of canonical marriages were some of the topical issues that were the backbone of the three intense days of conferences, which brought together numerous specialists.
