On the occasion of the upcoming elections in the United States and the uncertainty about their possible results, the Department of the Dual Degree in International Relations and Global Communication organised a master class at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (Comillas CIHS). The aim was to give students an in-depth look at the US electoral system. The lecture was given by Ignacio Molina, researcher at the Real Instituto Elcano and lecturer in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
During the lecture, Molina addressed fundamental issues about the political and social system in the United States, highlighting the particularities of its presidency, Congress and the judiciary. He also provided the audience with a detailed analysis of the US electoral map, reviewed the latest polls with the students, and explored the potential impact that the results of these elections could have on the international political scene.
"There are very different ways of understanding the United States within its own territory, and that affects its sense of patriotism," said Molina, referring to the current polarisation in the US. "The Republicans have clear priorities, but the Democrats are not sure how to handle themselves in this new context," he added.
