What is the Licenciatura?

The Degree in Canon Law is the postgraduate program that will allow you to gain an in-depth knowledge of the Church as an institution and the internal syntax that orders the activity of all members of the Church according to justice: lay people, religious, priests, bishops and the Roman Pontiff.

Canon Law at Comillas offers a synthesis between Philosophy, Theology and Law and allows you to work, with a pastoral approach, in favour of all those who need specialised advice, technical counselling, an effective defence of their rights, a safe company in their marital conflicts or any other type of conflict.

With a degree in Canon Law you will be able to be, within the Church and the world, the defender of those who cannot or do not know how to defend themselves, and you will be able to contribute to the triumph of justice.

2nd CYCLE

  • This Licenciate Degree consists of 180 credits (ECTS), distributed over three academic years

  • 13.5 elective credits must be added to the distribution indicated (please see below).

  • The 3rd and 4th years are taught cyclically every two academic years. Depending on the year in which the Degree begins, they will be offered either in order or in reserve order.

  • The timetable for courses is in the afternoon. Monday to Thursday in 3rd and 4th years; Tuesday to Thursday in 5th year.

Attendance at Canonical Meetings and Conferences

Conference for Studies on Current Issues in Canon and Ecclesiastical Law of the State (1 ECTS)

Each year, the Faculty of Canon Law organizes a Conference for Studies on a topic of special interest and current affairs, in a round table format.

Attendance at this Conference may be recognized as 1 credit (ECTS), provided that students submit a written work, following the indications provided in each case by their Tutor.

Conference of the Spanish Association of Canonists (3 ECTS)

Every year, the Canonical events of the Spanish Association of Canonists are held on the University campus, normally during Easter Week. These Sessions address new issues in Canon Law and Ecclesiastical Law of the State, the latest contributions of Canonical Jurisprudence and a more in-depth exploration of some of the most controversial topics, presented by specialists from other public and private Universities and from Comillas Pontifical University, as well as by judges and members of the Ecclesiastical Courts. There is also a specific forum for sharing and discussing initiatives, doubts and questions, or specific cases that are submitted by participants.

Students of the Faculty who wish to obtain 3 credits (ECTS) must attend all of the sessions of the Conference and hand in a written study which follows the indications given for each case by their Tutor in the Degree.

  • Because Comillas studies are in high demand and places are limited, the best candidates have to be selected through admission tests.

  • Each class has its own tutor, whose function is to integrate the student into the group and to pay attention to their academic performance. Furthermore, at Comillas, the teaching system is distinguished, among other characteristics, by the personalised attention and the fluid and permanent relationship between teachers and students.

  • The teaching system at Comillas is especially oriented towards the relationship with the reality of companies, institutions, organisations and professional practice. The Internship and Employment Office is responsible for providing students with internships related to their studies in order to enrich their training. In the 2017-18 academic year, 6,296 student internships were managed in companies.
    In addition to these internships managed by the Internship and Employment Office, all degree courses have a significant number of compulsory external internships as part of their curriculums.

  • The Internship and Employment Office informs, guides and collaborates in the insertion in the labour market of recent graduates or in the projection of the professional career of Comillas graduates, for which it has an online tool that puts candidates in direct contact with 5,078 companies with which Comillas maintains a relationship. During the 2017-18 academic year, 1,838 job offers were managed. Of the total number of graduates from the 2018 graduating class, 93.22% are employed, either working or furthering their studies, within six months of completing their studies.
