History of the library

Origin

The Comillas Pontifical University Library is a support service for study, teaching and research. This university library is organised as a single library, with two service points, one located at the Cantoblanco campus and the other at the Alberto Aguilera campus in the city of Madrid. The current library contains a rich antique collection: 24 incunabula, 34,500 books from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, as well as some 34,000 books from the 19th century. The gathering and coordination of the aforementioned libraries has culminated in the formation of an exceptional bibliographical heritage in Theology, Philosophy and spiritual sciences.

Biblioteca

Cantoblanco Headquarters - Central Library

It began its existence with the foundation of the Seminary and Pontifical University in Comillas (Cantabria) belonging to the Society of Jesus in 1892. In 1967 the university moved to Madrid and in 1972 it was installed in its new headquarters in Cantoblanco. Its own bibliographic collections were enriched, following its transfer to Madrid, by the contribution of the libraries of the following centres: Faculty of Theology in Oña (Burgos), Faculty of Philosophy in Alcalá de Henares, Centre of Humanistic Studies in Aranjuez, Centre of Humanistic Studies in Salamanca, Centre of Oriental Studies in Madrid and other private donations of considerable importance, mainly belonging to Jesuits.

Alberto Aguilera Headquarters

The Catholic Institute of Arts and Industries (ICAI) in Madrid has its origins in the School of Mechanics and Electricity, which began in 1908. In 1961 ICADE (Instituto Católico de Administración y Dirección de Empresas) was founded, with its own library, and the two merged in 1964. In 1980 the library of the Faculty of Canon Law was incorporated, in 1985 that of Professor Luis García de Valdeavellano and in 1994 the library of Beltrán de Heredia.
The Alberto Aguilera branch houses the main collections of Law, Economics and Business, which are used for ICADE and ICADE Business School studies, as well as Engineering, Mechanics, Physics and Computer Science for ICAI studies.
