The 24th Conference of the Aula de Derecho Parlamentario focused on reflection and debate on key issues such as freedom of expression and the rise of populism. Organised by the Universidad de Navarra in collaboration with the Regional Chamber, the event took place in the Parliament of Navarre and brought together leading experts in Constitutional and Procedural Law from various universities. María Isabel Álvarez and Federico de Montalvo, lecturers at the Faculty of Law (Comillas ICADE) attended on behalf of Comillas Pontifical University.
Unai Hualde, President of the Parliament of Navarre, opened the forum entitled "Parlamento y libertad de expresión: cuestiones problemáticas y una mirada desde la jurisprudencia constitucional", underlining the Parliament's commitment to the defence of freedom of expression. "The Parliament ensures that this freedom is guaranteed and respected, but it also questions whether there are limits, what they are, and where is the line that cannot be crossed without justification," Hualde said.
Asunción de la Iglesia, director of the Aula de Derecho Parlamentario and lecturer at the Universidad de Navarra, pointed out the importance of creating spaces such as this, where debate and reflection are encouraged through education and mutual respect. According to the Dean of the Faculty of Law of the Universidad de Navarra, Mercedes Galán, "From academia and institutions, we have the responsibility to encourage constructive dialogue that promotes the common good and respect for all people".
Throughout the day, topics such as the limits of freedom of expression, fake news, pseudo-media, commissions of enquiry and the right to the presumption of innocence, among other current issues, were discussed.
