Discovering Luisa Carnés at the Teatro Español for Women's Month
Members of the university community enjoyed the work of the writer of the Generation of '27 with the theatrical adaptation of "Natacha"
27 March 2025
As part of the cultural activities organised for Women's Month, members of the university community went to the Teatro Español to see the first novel by the journalist and writer Luisa Carnés, a leading figure of the Generation of '27.
Published in 1930, when the author was only 23 years old, Natacha was critically acclaimed as the work that established Carnés as "the best young novelist, the most vigorous and most substantial female name" of her time. The novel follows the story of Natalia Valle, known as Natacha, and starkly portrays the working conditions of women workers: long hours, fear of dismissal, harassment, exploitation, inequality and illness.
On this occasion, theatre director Laila Ripoll has staged an adaptation of Natacha, respecting the melodramatic moulds characteristic of the period in which it was written. The interpretation of the actress Natalia Huarte, together with an extraordinary cast, has managed to move the audience in the Margarita Xirgu hall of the Teatro Español.
From Comillas Arte we continue to promote cultural experiences and soon we will share new proposals to continue exploring the richness of art and literature.
