Comillas honours eleven young engineers at the ICAI Awards for the best End of Degree Projects

The 23rd edition of the awards recognises academic excellence and the transformative commitment of students in a ceremony marked by the memory of Pope Francis

On 23 April, Comillas Pontifical University celebrated the 23rd edition of the Awards for the best End of Degree Projects at the School of Engineering (Comillas ICAI), in a solemn ceremony that recognised eleven students for their brilliant work and their vision of the future.

In his opening speech, Antonio Allende SJ, rector of the university, recalled the figure of Pope Francis as "a spiritual guide and ethical reference in integral ecology, science with faith and social justice", and thanked the sponsors for their collaboration, whose involvement "brings meaning and commitment to the academic work".

For his part, the Director of the School of Engineering (Comillas ICAI), Antonio Muñoz, praised the quality of the work and reminded the students of their responsibility as engineers to transform the world with a sustainable, just and committed vision.

These were the winners and their respective projects:

  • Alberto Quintana -  Pattern Recognition in Myoelectric Signals
    National Association of ICAI Engineers Award, presented by Isabel Reija.
  • Celia Gómez Limia - Application of machine learning techniques to energy optimisation.
    Axpo Iberia Award, presented by Antonio Canseco.
  • Diego Mate Pulido Incorporating Hydrogen into openMASTER for decarbonazing the Spanish Energy System.
    BP Chair for a Sustainable Net Zero, presented by Estrella Jara.
  • Enrique Conde Rodríguez -  Application of hydrogen and its derivatives for the decarbonisation of the Spanish maritime transport system.
    Chair of Hydrogen Studies Award, presented by Rafael Cossent.
  • Luis Garrido Corrales -  Diagnosis of solar panels through automated image processing and its application to the automation of predictive maintenance programmes.
    Chair for Smart Industry Award, presented by Álvaro López.
  • Lucía Urbelz López-Puertas -  Implementation of 5G technologies in airports.
    Deloitte Award, presented by Enrique Sainz.
  • Isabel Escrivá de Romaní Escrig -  Analysis and technical-economic optimisation of a hybrid renewable plant.
    Empresarios Agrupados Award, presented by Roque Luis Perezagua.
  • Juncal Guerrero Rodríguez -Local energy transition: technical design and economic evaluation of an energy community in a municipality in Asturias.
    ENGIE Award, presented by Daniel Fernández.
  • Álvaro Ruiz del Tiempo -  Assesing mineral demand and constraints in the energy transition.
    Fundación Repsol Award, presented by Arantza Hernanz.
  • Jaime Masjuan Ginel -  An investment model for renewable power resources in the context of a fully decarbonized system.
    Iberdrola Award, presented by Rafael Bellido.
  • Javier Díaz de Rábago Pemán - Detection of hallucinations in large language models in the medical field.
    Management Solutions Award, presented by Javier Álvarez.

The closing ceremony was led by Belén Linares, Head of Innovation at Moeve, who inspired the award winners to lead technological change with ethics and purpose: "engineering is not only a technical decision, it also requires human intuition and common sense. The future belongs to bold and responsible engineers".

The event was a meeting point between university, business and society, consolidating the role of Comillas as a benchmark in the training of engineers committed to the great global challenges.
