How to use AI in Comillas?
Guidance on the Use of AI Tools
This Guide is designed to promote balanced, formative and ethical uses of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies within Comillas Pontifical University, as well as to encourage learning and research through them. It is also intended that this document will contribute to the appropriate use of AI tools by those of us at Comillas Pontifical University.
Generative AI systems are not perfect; they may provide inaccurate or copyrighted information. It can be difficult to immediately determine the accuracy of the information generated. Nevertheless, employers, and society as a whole, should expect Comillas Pontifical University graduates to be fully familiar with generative AI and to know how to use it responsibly.
This Guide focuses on generative AI, which refers to the creation of new content, whether text, images or other data, from patterns and structures learned from pre-existing information (this is the case of applications such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Llama, Grok or Deepseek, among others).
I am a student
In line with Comillas Pontifical University's commitment to academic excellence and to the training of competent professionals and responsible citizens, it is understood that AI can be used to foster innovation, creativity and quality work.
- The use of AI as a reference tool is allowed as long as it is acknowledged and cited in any submitted work. Students should review the course's Teaching Guide and consult with their lecturer about the use of AI in each of the subjects and in each of their activities (assignments, exams, etc.).
I am a teacher or researcher (PDI)
- Comillas encourages teachers to reflect carefully on the use of AI in their subject and to share their reflections with coordinators, teachers and students.
- As with other pedagogical tools, teachers who decide to incorporate AI tools into their courses should ensure that the conditions for their use are clearly stated in the Teaching Guide.
- Teachers and coordinators have the discretion to define how generative AI can be used in their courses, depending on the competences and learning outcomes to be acquired.
- Teachers are encouraged to work on developing critical thinking in their students to discern what information, from AI or other sources, is truly reliable.
- Intellectual honesty is particularly relevant in the context of using AI applications. Teachers are encouraged to speak openly about its importance, as well as about the impact of AI on the labour market and society as a whole.
- Teachers should be aware of the risks inherent in inputting data and information into AI tools, as they may subsequently be used by these tools without proper attribution.
I am administrative and service staff (PAS)
The University encourages members of the PAS to keep up to date with the advantages that the use of AI tools can bring and to use them in a responsible and ethical way. There are numerous daily activities (mail automation, report generation, meeting optimisation, data management...) that can be simplified through the use of AI tools.
- The appropriate use of AI tools offers two types of advantages: automation and simplification of tasks on the one hand, and expansion of analytical, creative and information management capabilities on the other.
- The PAS handles sensitive information of students, teachers and other members of the university community. Therefore, the use of AI tools must strictly comply with privacy and data protection regulations.
Important aspects to take into account
Current AI tools are imperfect and fallible, which requires an effort of review and testing by users.
The use of AI to create complete works or relevant parts, without citing the source or the tool or without being expressly permitted in the description of the work, will be considered plagiarism and regulated in accordance with the University's General Regulations. The same criteria will apply to the performance of research or any other academic task by the teaching and research staff.
All decisions based on AI tools must pass through the necessary filter of human assessment from a global point of view (operational, ethical, mission...).
It is prohibited to enter restricted data into any Generative AI tool or service without appropriate approval. This includes protected and personal data not authorised by the DPO or that does not comply with security measures, private information related to employees, materials without rights of use or exploitation, etc.
