Diploma in Communicative Skills and the Foreign Languages Studies

  • Introduction
  • Learning outcome
  • Global Scale of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (common reference levels)
  • Diploma structured according to the degree program

Traditionally, Comillas has taught languages through a range of unique and cutting-edge study programs.

Comillas is currently adapting its courses to a new set of guidelines designed to ensure greater compatibility between the different education systems in the European Higher Education Area.

Comillas has a long tradition of offering qualified and distinctive study programs that are adapted to social and practical needs, form strong ties with the professional world and facilitate exchanges with other universities. In keeping with this tradition, we offer the Diploma in Communication Skills and Foreign Languages Studies as both a compulsory and supplementary element of all new Bachelor's Degrees.

Introduction

  • This Diploma, designed in accordance with the new regulations on official university courses in Spain, is offered as both a compulsory and supplementary element of all new Bachelor's Degrees.
  • It consists of a minimum of 30 ECTS, of which at least 18 must be English modules. To make up the remaining credits, students can take the modules taught in English on their own degree programs.
  • The Diploma, studied over the four academic years of the Bachelor's Degree, has various essential common aspects yet its exact structure will vary according to the Bachelor's Degree under which it is studied.
    • It offers foreign language modules and the chance to study modules taught in English on the corresponding Bachelor's Degree.
    • Some modules form part of the Official Bachelor's Degree while others count toward the Diploma as a private degree.
  • The Diploma program is designed according to the level achieved by the student in the admissions tests.
  • On some degree programs, students with a proven advanced level (C) can choose to study a different language.

Learning outcome

The fundamental aim is for all Comillas students to graduate with a certain level of English, or a different foreign language, which will facilitate entry into their chosen professional field. The Diploma accredits a level of competency and command of English corresponding to B2 or C on the global scale of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

All Comillas graduates will be equipped with the linguistic tools required to:

  • Accurately and effectively communicate in English in personal, academic and professional settings.
  • Study part of their Bachelor's Degree abroad as an exchange student.
  • Meet the demands of the professional world.

The TOEFL® ITP or the Institutional TOEFL is an assessment tool based on previously administered TOEFL paper-based tests that measures individuals' English proficiency at the intermediate-to-advanced levels. It does not have the validity of an official TOEFL (given that it is based on old papers) and therefore, cannot be used to apply to for admission to a foreign university. However, the TOEFL ITP can be administered by higher education institutions such as the Universidad Pontificia Comillas for internal selection processes such as the selection of candidates for exchange programs with other universities.

The Institutional TOEFL is an English language exam, which includes three parts of the official TOEFL exam. These three parts are:

  • Section 1: Listening comprehension (35 min.)
  • Section 2: Structure and Written Expression (25 min.)
  • Section 3: Reading comprehension (55 min.)

Language Exchange

This page was created as a platform to provide a means for students to get in touch with and set up language exchanges with students from other countries. The only requirement for any student who wants to sign up for the Language Exchange is that he/she have an e-mail account open with the Universidad Pontificia Comillas.

To sign up for the Language Exchange (darse de 'Alta'), the student must carefully follow the instructions, providing the information requested by the program. Once she/he has registered, she/he can access the Language Exchange data base and look for students who are interested in participating in a Language Exchange. The search can be done using any language combination, which generally represents the student's native language and the language he/she wants to practice (e.g. inglés - español). The search can be limited even more to look for Language Exchange participants according to Faculty or School, age, sex or the semester(s) they will be studying at the University. The Search will produce a list of names corresponding to the search criteria selected. When you click on any of the names on the list, an e-mail window with the person's e-mail address will appear. This will allow you to write a message and establish an initial contact. You may write to as many people as you wish.

You can eliminate your data from the program at any time, selecting the 'Baja' feature.

Introduction

As an inter-faculty center, the Institute of Modern Languages organizes and delivers language courses at each of the University's Faculties and School, except for Translation and Interpreting, adapting these courses to the academic and professional needs of each degree program.

The languages that are currently offered are German, Chinese Spanish, French, English and Italian. These languages can be studied as Bachelor's Degree modules, Diploma modules or as supplementary courses.

On the new Bachelor's Degrees, language studies are channeled through the Diploma in Communication Skills and Foreign Language Studies.

Foreign language courses are also available to teaching, administration and service staff at the Comillas Pontifical University.
