Research

Involves the development of an academic research agenda linked to the diagnosis of the reality and to the definition and innovation of intervention policies, programs and projects in this field. It is developed using dialogue and collaboration with different agents, instituions and organizations that combine to form the sector. 

The research projects that are currently being conducted are:

  • A line of fundamental research through the undertaking and dissemination of doctoral theses on the subject matter of:
    1. Research on public policies and the legal system in the area of asylum and refuge. Conducted by Nuria Ferré, under the guidance of professor Cristina Gortázar.
    2. Research on processes and psychosocial tools regarding the social integration of forced migrants and refugees in Spain, conducted by Ángela Ordóñez under the guidance of María Prieto and Juan Iglesias.
  • Research on the Reception System and the social integration processes of asylum and refugee applicants in Spain. Directors: Trinidad Vicente (University of Deusto) and Juan Iglesias (Comillas Pontifical University)
  • Annual survey on forced migrants and refugees with the aim to obtain quality data on key variables, such as sociodemographic and migratory profiles, legal status, reception and social integration in order to help carry out precise diagnoses and comparisons over time.

Other Research Activities

Permanent Seminar on Migrations and Refugees. A migration and refugee seminar takes place each month during which an open discussion is held based on a particular research topic and bibliography. Members of the seminar are from the academic field, social organizations or the institutional sector. See calendar.

The Chair, as part of the IUEM, collaborates on research processes underway with other academic underway with other academic bodies. In tihs case, on the study on Reconciliation Processes, Personal and Community-based, of Forced Migrants and Refugees, the Comillas Pontifical University's own project.

Remunerated Placement Program

As part of the program's focus on collaboration between the Chair and social organizations that work with forced migrants and refugees, a program of remunerated on-the-ground placements has been developed.

Annual placements in national and international organizations that work with forced migrants and refugees such as Entreculturas, Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS), Jesuit Migration Service (JMS), etc., are offered. These placements are for postgraduate students of the Official Master's Degrees in Cooperation and Migration at the University Institute of Studies on Migration.

The following placements have been offered this academic year: Madrid (JMS), Seville (JMS), Cameroon (JMS) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (JMS).

Training

there is a drive for specialized training in the professional field of forced migrants and refugees. The task undertaken through the specialized training provided by the Official Master's and Doctorate Program in International Migration and Development Cooperation taught by the University through the Institute of Studies on Migration (IUEM).

Communication and awareness

Dissemination and awareness of the refugee situation at a national and international level, through specific actions -sessions, conferences, panels and expositions, etc. Such actions will be aimed at the general public and, specifically, at members of the university community -students, alumni, university personnel-, as well as at social networks and universities at which the institution is registered.
