The rise of biomechanics, as a set of measurement systems for assessing patients, provides an innovative means of objectifying functional evolution in physical therapy and all of its therapeutic tools.

New biomechanics equipment, with its advanced technological development during recent years, is facilitating the objective measurement of patients' functional situations, in the field of health, and more specifically, in sport. Thanks to this equipment, it is possible to obtain charts, which can be compared with the standardized and normalized movements, thus identifying variations in the biomechanical data. This makes it possible to gain a suitable amount of knowledge on the situation of athletes, which can be transferred to the clinical records of different professionals. This is reinforced as a specific need in the field of sports, where accuracy in athlete recovery and evolution data is essential to reduce recovery times and the return to competition.

With the objective data received from the biomechanical tests, it is possible to know the baseline situation of the athlete after the injury, accident or condition occurred, and they can be performed as many times as deemed appropriate in order to assess the evolution.

Applicant profile:

It is recommended that the applicant is interested in acquiring knowledge of biomechanics, as well as of the different elements currently available for the quantitative and objective assessment of mechanical or biarticular injuries, with a special inclination toward the field of sport. An outstanding academic profile is recommended, with versatility in order to properly handle both the language used in the humanistic disciplines, and that used in the field of health sciences. It is assumed, therefore, that the applicant must be a motivated person, professionally oriented towards promoting health and well-being among people in the field of sports, with the skills to establish personal relationships of help and support, without neglecting a holistic view of the patient as a whole.

Admission requirements:

In order to be admitted as a student and to attend the Official Master's Degree in Biomechanics and Sports Physiotherapy, the requirements set out by the valid legislation to access Postgraduate Programs must be met and the respective supporting documents shown.

It is a requirement that you hold a degree in Physical Therapy in order to access this Master's program.

Admission Process and Criteria:

In addition to complying with the previous requirements, the admission application has to be submitted following the given process and time frame, and approval given according to the selection criteria established by the School’s Admissions Committee for this program. The Director of the San Juan de Dios' University School of Nursing and Physical Therapy is responsible for admission, assisted by the Director and Coordinator of the Master's Program.

In order to decide whether or not to admit a candidate to the Official Master's Degree, the following criteria will be considered, with the following weighting:

  1. Average grade obtained in the Bachelor's Degree/Diploma in Physical Therapy (50%).
  2. Curriculum, where professional merits relating to the Master's will be valued (25%).
  3. Personal interview to assess the student's motivation and skills (25%).

The purpose of the personal interview is to explore the following areas:

  1. Assessment of the academic record up until present, identifying strengths and areas of interest.
  2. Assessment of student motivation to study this Official Master's Program, and to study in this University, as well as any previous knowledge in the field. This part of the interview also makes it possible for the interviewer to provide the student with further information, as well as better academic and professional guidance.
  3. General exploration of the distinctive features and skills of the applicant, estimating how much he/she is suited to the studies of the Official Master's Degree in Biomechanics and Sports Physiotherapy.
  4. The Interviewer draws up a report, which will be considered as other data to be taken into account by the Admissions Committee.

GOALS:
  • To provide students with high-level theoretical and practical knowledge of the different types of clinical biomechanics equipment, in terms of both theoretical and practical aspects.
  • To provide students with the different clinical applications and protocols of action in Sports Physiotherapy for injuries using biomechanics tools.
  • To instruct the student in the application and clinical management of the latest biomechanics equipment which is currently used in the different health and professional fields, and to understand the multidisciplinary professional integration of the applications of biomechanics in the field of sports.
  • To provide students with theoretical and practical research knowledge linked to biomechanics, more specifically in the field of Sports Physiotherapy.
  • To provide graduates with the necessary technical tools in biomechanics to transmit the benefits of objective quantitative measurement through biomechanics in the different professional and research projects in which they are involved.
  • To promote high quality research projects by assessing aspects of sport injuries using biomechanics.
  • To enable students to be a point of reference in biomechanics and sports physiotherapy, within their different professional competencies and multidisciplinary fields, integrating research knowledge with that from their professional field.
  • To provide the appropriate theoretical and practical tools for tackling sports injuries in the musculoskeletal system which are studied through biomechanical modifications.
  • To provide tools for the objective assessment of injuries through biomechanical tests to be able to appropriately deal with specific sport physical therapies, allowing certain aspects of the injuries athletes suffer to be changed.
  • To promote research through the application of health technologies in the professional field of physiotherapy which are adequately evaluated using the scientific method through quantitative measurement systems based on objective evidence.
  • To provide theoretical and practical tools to improve the evolution of an athlete's recovery by means of manual and physical therapies and by integrating therapeutic processes.
  • To stimulate critical analysis of the physical therapy techniques employed in sport following biomechanical analysis and the knowledge required to modify them with regards to patients not involved in the field of high performance.
  • To know the professional fields relating to sports physiotherapy, with the purpose of facilitating integration of the procedures and multidisciplinary work.

 

METHODOLOGY

The face-to-face classes will have the following academic structure:

  • Discussion regarding case studies and problems in class.
  • Skills workshops, Simulations and Role Playing in the classroom.
  • Clinical sessions in the classroom with real patients.

 

ASSESSMENT METHODS:

Continuous assessment will be carried out for the different subjects offered on the Master's Program, through grids filled out by the lecturers on a daily basis. Likewise, different objective tests and activities complying with the goals and competencies developed in the Master's Program will be submitted and used to obtain the user's grade.

  • CE6 - Determine the patient's diagnosis and treatment in Sports Physiotherapy by means of advanced techniques and instrumental biomechanics.
  • CE7 - Design the Sports Physiotherapy treatment or Intervention Plan with implementation of biomechanics tools and advanced techniques in Sports Physiotherapy.
  • CE8 - Assess the evolution of the results of the advanced Physical Therapies in sport by means of instrumental biomechanics tools.

Distribuidos del siguiente modo en las materias:

1. Sesiones Clínicas en Biomecánica y Fisioterapia Deportiva.
Profesionales del ámbito deportivo en activo y con acreditada experiencia clínica tanto en la fisioterapia deportiva como en las herramientas biomecánicas, realizarán sesiones clínicas con los alumnos. Del mismo modo acudirán a las sesiones un conjunto de pacientes deportistas con lesiones específicas para ser evaluados, tratados y reevaluados y una vez finalizada la sesión, se hará un trabajo de puesta en común con el profesor.

2. Trabajo Fin de Máster.
Trabajo de investigación, inédito y original que deberá ser expuesto ante un tribunal.

3. Investigación a través de la biomecánica en la Fisioterapia Deportiva.
Se desarrollará una formación específica en herramientas de valoración objetiva aplicables al método científico en investigación de Fisioterapia Deportiva.

4. Biomecánica Instrumental.
El alumnado deberá aprender a manejar y aplicar los distintos equipos de biomecánica que permitan objetivar las capacidades deportivas de los pacientes (Dinamómetros, sistemas de análisis del movimiento, plataformas de presiones...).

5. Técnicas Avanzadas en Fisioterapia Deportiva.
La materia está formada por tres asignaturas que agrupan las terapias específicas de fisioterapia deportiva en técnicas manuales, terapias físicas y sistemas de integración. Se verán técnicas aplicadas a la fisioterapia deportiva que permitan abordar con herramientas clínicas y terapéuticas las distintas afecciones que los pacientes puedan tener.

6. Ciencias Básicas y Afines a la Fisioterapia Deportiva.
El conocimiento interdisciplinar de los profesionales que abordan al deportista es un criterio imprescindible para la mejora y la coordinación en un equipo de trabajo. Profesores de distintas áreas afines a la fisioterapia deportiva abordarán la casuística necesarias para la resolución de casos ligados al deportista.
